Note: All our language classes are sequentially progressive. The first stage is Level 1a. If the class is Level 1a, the Level 1b follows on and is not a repeat of Level 1a.

Chinese for Travellers
Being able to speak Mandarin Chinese or Putonghua will enable you to be understood wherever you travel in China . This course teaches you the basics of the spoken and written language, enabling you to interact with the locals in a variety of social settings, making your travelling experience that much more enjoyable and memorable.

Chinese Language 1a
This interactive beginner's course teaches you basic standard Chinese, also known as Putonghua or Mandarin Chinese. You will learn both written and spoken Chinese, and be encouraged to make use of what you learn in everyday situations. You will also learn about China , its' people, history and culture. Course Fee: $ 60

Chinese Language 1b
This course continues on from Chinese Language 1a. Classes will be interactive and continue to build on your communication skills and fluency. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about China and the Chinese language. Course Fee: $ 60

Conversatonal Chinese
A beginners course in spoken Mandarin Chinese, especially suited to learners who wish to master the spoken form only. No prior knowledge of the language is required. The course aims to teach you to communicate confidently in Chinese in a variety of everyday situations. Course Fee: $ 60

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) - Beginners
This is a dynamic and interactive course aimed to teach everyday English, which will hasten the learners' assimilation into the New Zealand society and culture. The course topics are chosen to encourage students to acquire a good understanding of the language while developing vital communication skills.
ESOL Daytime classes are available at Day School - for details please phone 358 9033. Fee via TEC $70 per term.

ESOL - Intermediate
This course integrates listening, reading, speaking and writing skills and real life situations to meet learners' language and situation needs. Independent learning skills are promoted and culture valued throughout. ESOL Daytime classes are available at Day School - for details phone 358 9033.

French for Travellers
Are you going to France and don't speak a word of the language? This course covers the basics of the spoken and written language to help you get more out of your travel experience. You will learn useful and practical phrases and information on shopping, eating out, using public transport, the telephone, getting accommodation, etc.

Filipino Language for Beginners
This beginner's course teaches you basic Filipino written and spoken language. The course includes grammar and vocabulary in Filipino so that you can use and apply the language with confidence. Social conversational sessions and interactions included in the course to develop the foundation of speaking and writing in the language fluently.

French Language 1a
An introduction to French. This is mainly a conversation class using role play in everyday situations. You'll also learn about France and the French people. Some language homework is needed as a necessary back up to listening, speaking and reading in class. A booklet needs to be bought from the tutor during the course at a cost of $10 each. Optional cassettes/CDs are also available from your tutor to help you practise pronunciation at a cost of $5 each. Course Fee: $ 60

This course is for you if you have completed French Language 1b and have a good grasp of basic French language and you wish to continue on to the next level. At the completion of this course, participants should be at a level equivalent to that reached at the end of Year 11 (Form 5) French. Course Fee: $75

If you have completed our French Language 2 programme or Year 11 (Form 5) French, this course is for you. French Language 3 is a more advanced course where fluency of conversation is developed. Course Fee: $75

Are you heading to a German speaking country for your holiday? Here's your chance to have a short introduction to the basics of the German language including lessons on shopping, eating out, using public transport, using the telephone and going to the doctor or dentist. A booklet needs to be bought from the tutor at an approximate cost of $5 each. Tapes are also available from your tutor with relevant vocabulary at a cost of $5 each. Course Fee: $50

Italian for Travellers
You will learn to express yourself in basic situations: being in a restaurant, making a telephone call, getting accommodation, telling the time, how to catch a train (or work out why you missed it!) You will not only be able to survive during your travel experience, but you will get more out of it, experiencing the pleasure of interacting with people. Course Fee: $50

Italian Language 1a
Do you want to start speaking (and writing!) in Italian? We offer the basics of Italian grammar and pronunciation through a variety of fun language activities including role play, conversation and videos. Also learn about Italian culture with particular attention to food, music, literature and the best tourist spots. Course Fee: $60

Italian Language 2
Have you completed Italian 1b and want to take your studies further? Or maybe you have equivalent knowledge from travel or experience. The emphasis is on speaking, but we will also continue to build the foundations of grammar for the development of both spoken and written Italian. We will also continue to explore Italian culture through literature and cinema. Course Fee: $75

Japanese for Everyone
Help to make your trip to Japan better - Learn how to greet others and introduce yourself, count, read signs, go shopping and understand the currency, order meals, book accommodation, use public transport and the phone. Course Fee: $60

Japanese Language 1a
A basic Japanese course, that covers written Japanese, focussing on essential Japanese forms (Hiragana and basic Kanji), and spoken Japanese that you will use in everyday situations. Also learn about Japanese culture. Course Fee: $ 60

This course is suitable for those who have completed Japanese Language 1a and/or have a basic understanding of Japanese. This course will extend your knowledge of oral and written Japanese. Classes will include some discussion on selected Japanese films, with the aim of improving both listening and conversational skills. Course Fee: $60

Maori Language 1a
Learn to pronounce Maori words clearly, correctly and with ease. You will learn to write Maori language with correct punctuation and read Maori text aloud. The course teaches some tikanga (traditional culture) and Marae protocols. Course Fee: $60

NZ Sign Language 1a
Are you interested in visual communication? This is a practical course for anyone interested in communicating confidently and easily with the deaf, be it family, friend, government department or business. NZSL is the natural language at the heart of the adult deaf community. Course Fee: $ 60

Here is everything you need if you are heading to South America or Spain. You'll learn about travel, food, customs, greetings and services. Spanish Language 1a
This is a participatory introduction to the Spanish language offering basic grammar and pronunciation. There is emphasis on conversation and practical usage of the language, which is achieved through role playing, games, videos and contact with the Latin American and Spanish cultures. We experience Spanish food, song, dance and literature. Course Fee: $60

Spanish Language 1b
After completing Spanish Language 1a, continue with this course. We will continue to build on your grammar and pronunciation. There is emphasis on conversation and practical usage of the language gained by using role plays, games and videos. Course Fee: $60

Spanish Language 2
Take your Spanish competency further. You will achieve the level of Year 11 (Form 5) Spanish if you complete this year long course. You will make better progress if you have completed our Spanish 1 course or have equivalent knowledge. Course Fee: $75

Spanish Language 3
An opportunity for you to increase your Spanish competency in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. By the end of this year you will be ready to sit the examination for the Diploma in Spanish as a Second Language at the level of the “Certificado Inicial” (Auckland University). You will make better progress if you have completed Year 11 (Form 5) Spanish (our Spanish Language 2 course), or have equivalent knowledge. Text books are an additional cost. Course Fee: $75
