Budgeting your Family Income
Are you or a family member facing changes in your income or finding it difficult to see where the money is going each week? This course covers budgeting, goal setting, how to balance a budget and manage your personal cashflow. We also look at the banking system and how to use it effectively and managing your credit card.
The course also prepares students to undertake NZQA Unit Standards 524 and 6658.
A comprehensive range of handouts and a booklet “Stretching your Dollars” will be supplied. Course Fee: $40

Effective Speaking
Learn to speak so people listen. Overcome your fear of public speaking and improve your own listening skills. Learn to overcome nerves and be able to share your thoughts, ideas and opinions freely and confidently in front of an audience. Develop your ability to speak with confidence and poise. The course includes presentational speaking, social speaking and interviewing. Not suitable for students whose first language is not English.
Course Fee: $50

Environmental Philosophy (NEW)
"Environmental Philosophy" discusses our use of the environment. The course opens with some basic ethical theory. We then cover salient issues including the use of animals, the moral status of endangered species and whether or not we should give some animals rights. We also discuss possible obligations to future generations and and whether we have any obligations to help third world countries. Participants of this course are encouraged to challenge the ideas we discuss and form informed positions regarding these issues. Each topic is discussed in relation to the ideas of prominent philosophers both historical and contemporary. Nonetheless, this course is designed to be accessible to the general public. Course Fee: $ 50

How to become a Writer
Whether you are happy to stay an amateur or want to make the jump to professional writing, this course has the goods for you. An award-winning journalist and published author will guide you through the course. Learn what you need to do to succeed as a writer, how to avoid writer's block, and approach the day-to-day task of writing. Not suited for poets and not a "creative" writing class, but the real thing. Course Fee: $40

Local Studies (NEW)
This course will cover history and geography of the local area with topics covered such as terraces in the city, streets, the Hoffman kiln, trees, the railway, and the 1936 storm.
Students will have the opportunity to undertake some research of their own and contribute to the course. Course Fee: $ 55

Medieval Times - Everyday Life Reflection
You've seen the movie, now experience the real thing. Learn what it was like to live in the Middle Ages and discover more about knights, damsels, castles, arms and armour, music, food, social structure and customs, and the origin of language. Your instructor has conducted medieval tournaments in the United Kingdom and Ireland .

The philosophy of love and other emotions (NEW)
This course takes students on a journey through philosophical perspectives both ancient and modern on emotions such as love, happiness, integrity, jealousy, anger and forgiveness. The course incorporates the ideas of prominent thinkers including Plato, Aristotle and Seneca in our consideration of the nature of these emotions, their moral implications and their impact on our daily life. The course is designed to make these issues accessible to someone with no previous experience of philosophy and encourages participants to think clearly about and challenge their own intuitions and the theories of others when thinking about emotions and how they affect our lives.Course Fee: $ 50
